ToggleOverview of UPSC CSE Three-Stage Selection Process
Understanding the UPSC exam pattern in depth is not just useful — it is fundamental to building the right preparation strategy. At Ekam IAS Academy, Hyderabad’s best IAS coaching institute, we make sure every student in our Foundation Course understands the exam architecture before they study a single topic. This structural clarity is what helps Ekam students approach preparation strategically rather than randomly.
UPSC Prelims Exam Pattern: GS Paper 1 and CSAT Paper 2
The UPSC Civil Services Examination has three distinct stages. Stage 1 is the Preliminary Examination — an objective test held usually in June. It has two papers: GS Paper 1 (100 questions, 200 marks, 2 hours) and CSAT Paper 2 (80 questions, 200 marks, 2 hours). Only GS Paper 1 marks count for Prelims ranking. CSAT is qualifying with 33% minimum. Negative marking of one-third of marks applies for every wrong answer.
UPSC Mains Exam Pattern: 9 Papers, 1750 Marks
Stage 2 is the Main Examination — a descriptive test usually held in September. It consists of nine papers spread over 5-6 days. Paper A and Paper B are qualifying language papers (300 marks each, not counted in merit). The remaining seven papers count for merit: Essay (250 marks), GS I, GS II, GS III, GS IV (250 marks each), Optional Paper I and Optional Paper II (250 marks each). Total: 1750 marks from merit papers.
UPSC Personality Test (Interview): 275 Marks
Stage 3 is the Personality Test or Interview conducted by UPSC board members for 275 marks. The interview is not a test of knowledge but of personality, communication, judgment, and suitability for civil service. Total marks = Mains (1750) + Interview (275) = 2025 marks. The final rank is determined based on this combined score.
Cut-Off Trends: What Score Do You Need to Clear Each Stage?
Cut-off trends vary by category. In 2024, the Prelims cut-off for General category was approximately 98-100 marks out of 200. Mains cut-off for interview shortlisting was around 740-750 out of 1750. Final selection cut-off was approximately 1000-1020 out of 2025. Ekam IAS Academy’s Prelims Test Series PRATHAM, Foundation Course, Deeksha Mains Test Series, and Mentorship Program are specifically designed to help students clear each stage’s cut-off with comfortable margins.
