Unified Payments Interface (UPI)

The Unified Payments Interface (UPI) has completed a decade of transforming India’s digital payment landscape. Developed by the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI), UPI has emerged as a major pillar of India’s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) by enabling instant, secure and interoperable financial transactions.

From a domestic payment platform launched in 2016, UPI has expanded into an internationally recognised digital payment system and is now operational in 11 foreign countries, strengthening India’s role in global digital innovation.

What is Unified Payments Interface (UPI)?

UPI is a real-time digital payment system that allows users to link multiple bank accounts through a single mobile application.

It enables:

  • Instant bank-to-bank fund transfers.
  • Merchant payments through QR codes.
  • Digital banking services through mobile platforms.
  • 24×7 payment accessibility.

UPI ensures secure transactions through features such as two-factor authentication and end-to-end encryption, making digital payments faster and safer.

Rapid Growth of UPI in India

UPI has witnessed unprecedented growth since its launch.

Between FY 2016–17 and FY 2025–26:

  • Annual transaction volume increased from around 2 crore transactions to more than 24,162 crore transactions, registering nearly a 12,000-fold increase.
  • Transaction value increased from around ₹0.07 lakh crore to nearly ₹314 lakh crore, showing more than a 4,000-fold growth.

As of July 2026, the UPI ecosystem included around 741 participating banks, reflecting widespread adoption across India’s financial sector.

In July 2026 alone, UPI processed over 2,365 crore transactions worth nearly ₹29.87 lakh crore.

Evolution of UPI

Launch Phase (2016)

UPI was introduced on a pilot basis in April 2016 with 21 member banks and was opened for public use in August 2016.

The BHIM application, launched in December 2016, further encouraged direct bank-to-bank digital payments.

Expansion of Merchant Payments (2017)

Dynamic QR codes were introduced, simplifying merchant payments by automatically capturing transaction details and reducing manual errors.

UPI 2.0 (2018)

UPI 2.0 introduced advanced features including:

  • Invoice in the Inbox for reviewing bills before payment.
  • Signed Intent and QR for secure approvals.
  • UPI Mandates for recurring payments.
  • Linking of overdraft accounts with UPI.

Wider Adoption and Digital Inclusion (2019–2022)

UPI expanded beyond basic transactions with features such as:

  • UPI AutoPay for recurring payments like subscriptions, insurance and EMIs.
  • UPI 123PAY for feature phone users.
  • UPI Lite for quick low-value transactions.
  • Credit card integration with UPI.

During this period, UPI crossed one billion monthly transactions in 2019 and surpassed five billion monthly transactions in March 2022.

Bhutan became the first country to adopt UPI for cross-border payments.

Credit Integration and Advanced Features (2023–2025)

In 2023, Credit Line on UPI enabled users to access pre-approved bank credit facilities through UPI.

In 2024, new features such as UPI Circle allowed primary users to authorise secondary users for payments within predefined limits.

Transaction limits were also enhanced:

  • Tax payment limit increased to ₹5 lakh per transaction.
  • UPI 123PAY limit increased to ₹10,000.
  • UPI Lite wallet limit increased to ₹5,000.

In 2025, device-based authentication through fingerprint and face recognition improved accessibility, especially for senior citizens and first-time digital payment users.

UPI’s Global Expansion

UPI has emerged as one of the world’s leading real-time payment systems.

According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), UPI accounted for around 49% of global real-time payment transaction volume in 2024.

Currently, UPI is operational in countries including:

  • Bhutan
  • Nepal
  • Singapore
  • UAE
  • France
  • Sri Lanka
  • Mauritius
  • Qatar
  • Cambodia
  • Greece
  • Maldives

Recent developments include:

  • Cambodia: NPCI International Payments Limited partnered with ACLEDA Bank to introduce UPI acceptance.
  • Greece: UPI-based cross-border remittance services were launched through Eurobank.
  • Maldives: Integration between India’s UPI and Maldives’ instant payment system Favara enabled cross-border transactions.

Significance of UPI for India

UPI has played a crucial role in promoting:

  • Financial inclusion by bringing digital payments to rural and underserved populations.
  • Transparency by reducing dependence on cash transactions.
  • Ease of doing business through quick merchant payments.
  • Innovation through India’s Digital Public Infrastructure model.
  • Global digital cooperation by enabling other countries to adopt similar payment solutions.

Conclusion

UPI represents one of India’s most successful digital transformation initiatives. Within a decade, it has evolved from a domestic payment platform into a globally recognised digital infrastructure system.

By combining speed, security, interoperability and accessibility, UPI has strengthened financial inclusion and demonstrated the potential of India’s Digital Public Infrastructure model in shaping the future of global digital payments.
