Origin and Financing of Dedicated Freight Corridors

The Dedicated Freight Corridor Corporation of India Limited (DFCCIL) was established in 2006 as a special purpose vehicle to develop and manage these corridors.

The initial years involved project planning, land acquisition and route finalisation. Major construction activities, including track laying, electrification and commissioning, accelerated between 2014 and 2026.

The projects received financial support from international institutions:

  • World Bank: ₹14,900 crore
  • Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA): ₹38,722 crore
  • Remaining funding through government budgetary support.

Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC)

The Western Dedicated Freight Corridor extends over 1,506 km, connecting Jawaharlal Nehru Port (JNPT) in Maharashtra to Dadri in Uttar Pradesh.

The corridor primarily handles container traffic from major western ports, including:

  • JNPT and Mumbai Port in Maharashtra
  • Mundra, Pipavav and Kandla ports in Gujarat

These containers move towards inland terminals such as Tughlakabad, Dadri, Dhandari Kalan and Khatuwas.

Apart from containers, the corridor is designed to transport commodities such as fertilisers, foodgrains, coal, steel, iron and cement.

Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor (EDFC)

The Eastern Dedicated Freight Corridor covers 1,337 km, connecting Ludhiana in Punjab to Sonnagar in Bihar.

It mainly supports the movement of coal and mineral resources from eastern India.

The corridor consists of:

  • A 936-km electrified double-line section between Sonnagar and Dadri.
  • A 401-km electrified single-line section between Ludhiana and Khurja.

The EDFC was fully commissioned in October 2023 and was designed to bypass densely populated urban areas to ensure smoother freight movement.

Completion of Western Corridor and Impact

The final three sections of the WDFC cover 326 km and were developed at a cost of over ₹20,700 crore.

These sections include:

  • New Sanand (North) to New Makarpura
  • New Umbergaon to New Saphale
  • New Saphale to New JNPT

With the operationalisation of the Vaitarna–JNPT stretch, the corridor now has direct connectivity with India’s largest container port, improving export-import logistics.

Together, both corridors now handle around 426 freight trains daily.

Faster Freight Movement

DFCs have significantly improved train speeds. Freight trains on these corridors operate at over 50 kmph on average, nearly double the speed of many non-DFC freight services.

Boost to Rail Freight Share

Railways currently handle around 27% of freight movement, while the National Rail Plan aims to increase this share to 45% by 2030.

Improved Passenger Services

The government has announced plans for a third Dedicated Freight Corridor connecting Dankuni in West Bengal to Surat in Gujarat.

The proposed east-west corridor will complement the existing eastern and western corridors and further strengthen India’s freight transportation network.
